Fossils in an Area
Objective: Students will determine the types of ancient life common in the area long
ago.
Learner Goals: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6
Materials: small hand tools that can be easily carried, a hand lens, and modeling clay
Procedure:
1. While hiking notice the fossils in rock formation along the banks of Floyds Fork.
2. Make a cast of the fossils using modeling clay.
3. Identify and determine the age of the fossil using field guides and keys.
* Be careful not to disturb nearby biomes.
Assessment: Charts or displays giving ages of the fossils, describing the animal that
produced them. These may be presented to other science classes.
